Karlo Odinsbo
The Hanging GirlKarlo Odinsbo is a former principal whose memories and school records help Carl Mørck and Assad correct a key error in their inquiry into Alberte Goldschmid. Though he initially remembers the student only faintly, the visit to his home and the school yearbooks establishes that the man recorded as Kristoffer Dalby was actually Kristoffer Studsgaard.
Identity and Setting
Karlo receives the investigators at home with his wife, Karina Odinsbo. The narrative presents him as tall, thin, elderly, and bearded, dressed in corduroy trousers and a tweed jacket; his appearance suggests a literature professor. He leads the visitors to a kitchen whose windowsill is crowded with herb pots. The domestic setting becomes an informal archive: before consulting old school records, Karlo proposes that they have coffee.
Recalling a Former Student
The investigators are trying to establish who Kristoffer Dalby was and what connection he had to Alberte. A group photograph marked Fall Semester 1997 gives them an initial lead: the name Kristoffer Dalby appears beneath handwritten names and arrows, and Carl identifies the student seated on the floor at the front. Karlo and Karina examine the image, which is small and unclear, and arrange for the yearbooks to be brought from the sitting room.
When Assad points out the young man in an Icelandic sweater with a downy beard, Karlo says that he remembers him, though not very well. Karina challenges that modest recollection by recalling a specific incident: the student played trumpet at their hat party, and his playing was so out of tune that the other musicians stopped. Her memory supplies the concrete detail Karlo’s first response lacks.
Correcting the Record
Checking the names beneath the photograph, Karlo finds that the student’s surname was Studsgaard, not Dalby. He cannot explain why Dalby appeared on the police copy; Karina recognizes the correct name as Kristoffer Studsgaard. The discrepancy turns the household’s old yearbook into a practical investigative tool, correcting a mistaken identity rather than merely adding color to the visit.
Once the name is settled, Carl raises the possibility that Kristoffer Studsgaard had a brief affair with Alberte while attending the school. The conversation places Karlo among the former school staff whose memories may help illuminate Alberte’s past, although the available exchange records the question rather than Karlo’s answer. His importance here is therefore both archival and personal: he helps verify the name, while Karina’s recollection gives the investigators a more particular image of the student.
